On second thought, let’s not go to Camelot; it is a silly place

Memory whiplash

This time of year has always been one of memories. The start of the school year, thoughts back to grade school and high school in Chicago and the start of every year of college. But especially for the last few years it brings back thoughts of my serious start of my wine education.

Two years ago I was in New York City for a one week intensive Advanced Certificate class from International Wine Center. The reason why I know it was two years ago this week, is because Hurricane Katrina hit that week. So every time I hear about Hurricane Katrina, the first thing I think about is wine school. Oddly enough, in our class we had someone who lived in the New Orleans area. She ended up leaving the class early to go home and see how things where. I’ve often wondered what happened to her.

After taking a “semester” off, I started the Diploma program. I delayed the start mostly because I had started a new job right before the Advanced class and I didn’t want to upset my new boss with studying. (Boy is that funny looking back on.)

I’m now 1 year and almost 9 months into the Diploma program. It seems a lot longer and a lot shorter.

I now sit waiting for exam results for Unit 3 and finish writing my one final Unit 1 paper. Every time I go to get the mail I have a feeling of fear and anticipation.

Depending on my results for Unit 3 varies how much work I have left to do. Assuming I passed, I only will need to retake the spirit exam. If I didn’t pass, than I have the Unit 3 and the spirit exam to retake.

Right now I can’t tell if the light at the end of the tunnel is an on coming train or a sunny beach in Provence.

And I get to experience all of these feelings while patiently waiting for the arrival of our first child, which is also due at any time.

Oddly enough, with all of these emotions, I’ve been fairly calm. Or at least that’s what I keep telling myself.
