On second thought, let’s not go to Camelot; it is a silly place

Germany Photos 2: Köln to Mehring

The second chunk of photos (56!) from our trip to Germany starts here. This batch begins on Monday at midday on the Autobahn; after having rendezvoused with Karla and our luggage (and converted to lighter clothing, hooray for shorts!), we set out south toward the Mosel for a series of wine tastings: Dr. Loosen in Bernkastel, Clüsserath-Weiler in Trittenheim, St. Urbans-hof in Leiwen. If you happen to be looking at the map, this batch covers items one through five on the itinerary, plus an intermediate stop in Piesport to take in the view, concluding with our arrival in the village of Mehring.

There’s some pretty good stuff in here (if I do say so myself), including a few of what I’d consider to be the stand-out images of the trip. I’ll probably be posting the next batch over the weekend, so stay tuned!

totally awesome pictures. Looks like you had lovely weather! And such pretty wineries! I especially love the steep vinyards overlooking the river. So picturesque! So old-world! So… how was that climb? ;)

Weather was hot and humid (a lot like what we were hoping to leave behind in Cleveland): high temps around 34C, humidity around 55-60%. Sticky!

That climb in Trittenheim was surprisingly brutal: a set of stairs leads you to the really big set of stairs, for which the reward of your climb is a narrow, steep path of somewhat loose slate further up to the top of a rock outcropping (that big, blue-grey cliff visible in some of the Trittenheim photos). While you’re climbing that narrow bit, your only realistic option is to make very close friends with the slate cliff next to you, a matter made more complicated by the fact that, being a giant chunk of dark slate rock, it is basically a brick oven stuck onto the side of a mountain. Verena pointed out that the grapes closer to the cliff face ripen noticeably faster than grapes on vines further out from the cliff, and when you’re standing there with buckets of sweat pouring off of you, it’s easy to believe. Thank goodness she’d had the foresight to bring a bottle of water and some glasses along so that we could have a bit of refreshment before heading back down; I probably would have passed out otherwise. The views, however, were to die for.

Did you have “fun, fun, fun on ze Autobahn?”

Actually, yeah, it was pretty fun on the Autobahn. :-) At one point I was allowed to play some of “my music” so we got to listen to some KMFDM and Kraftwerk and such, which seemed quite appropriate. :-)

I’m curious to see how long it takes for comments to go from “thanks for sharing” to “omg, not more photos! l4m3!!”

excuse me, but who was the one who had the fun driving?

Did I say anywhere that *I* was driving? No. Just that I enjoyed the Autobahn, especially the bits where we got to listen to kick-ass music. That’s all.

    Stupid Hertz grumble grumble.
