Seven Songs Stuck Strangely in Snaky Synapses

Tagged by [info]gieves, I humbly submit the deadly and dangerous Meme of the Seven Songs, in no particular order, and with some slight cheating:

  1. Gordon Lightfoot - “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”
Still beautiful and haunting despite the number of times NPR plays it on the anniversary of the eponymous tragedy.
  2. Thievery Corporation - “The Heart’s a Lonely Hunter”
With groovy rhythms and lyrics like “Welcome to my spaceship! You’re beautiful forever!” is it possible to go wrong?
  3. The Magnetic Fields - “I’m Sorry I Love You”
Raucous, upbeat, bittersweet, twangy; the kind of song that insists you sing along, loudly.
  4. Gorillaz - “Kids With Guns”
Actually all of Demon Days is pretty infectious (in a good way); this album worked great as a soundtrack for my commute as the weather turned grey.
  5. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - “Supernaturally”
A couple months ago I would have said “Nature Boy”, and before that “There She Goes, My Beautiful World”, but this has clawed its way into my brain and won’t leave
  6. VNV Nation - “Perpetual”
Still gets cranked super-loud when driving to muffle my attempts to sing along; burning up my CD player for months!
  7. The KLF - “Last Train to Trancentral”
Blame its inclusion at the conclusion of Blue Man Group’s “Tubes” show in Chicago (egad! two years ago?!?) for the rekindling of my KLF addiction; its only failing is that it’s over too soon.
  8. Special bonus song (because it just came around on the old shuffle play): Air - “Lucky and Unhappy”

Tragically, the new Mike Oldfield album (Light+Shade) is overall somewhat mediocre; though definitely an improvement over Tr3s Lunas, I am starting to agree that he’s on a trajectory that will never take him to another Amarok, Hergest Ridge, or even Tubular Bells sequel. Of course, it could be that I’ve barely listened to it and it hasn’t had much time to grow on me yet. We’ll see.

Takk…, the latest Sigur Ros album, however, is excellent, but it fails to make the list because I’ll be damned if I’m going to figure out how to correctly enter any of those wacky Scandinavian moon-letters in HTML. At least the tracks on this one have names…

I got chastised a bit the last time I followed through on the “tag X number of people” part of a meme, so I shall refrain from doing so tonight. Post your songs, don’t post your songs, who cares! Be free from obligation, and enjoy!

Sundoooooown, you better take care if I find you’ve been creepin’ round my back stairs.

If you could read my mind love…

Did I ever tell you that my father was A) tone deaf, B) hard of hearing, and C) loved to blast the “Sunny” lite rock station while working so he could hear something while I was a child? Ah, the memories. Gordon Lightfood, Peaches and Herb, Neil Diamond…

“Wacky Scandinavian moon-letters.” There’s a new one. ;) Though I’m not sure that Iceland is technically part of Scandinavia (even if Icelandic is basically an ancient version of one of the Scandinavian languages, I don’t remember which).

For more than you ever wanted to know about this topic, see wikipedia:Scandinavia</A

(none of this, of course, should distract from the main point that Sigur Ros is excellent. :) )

I find your list interesting for its elucidations! I’m always intrigued by your musical selection and analyses and think that you should share your musical commentary more often with us :)

If you had asked me two or three weeks ago, something from Demon Days would be been on my list (though which song? which song?! so hard to choose just one…), as would “Heart’s a Lonely Hunter” since I also listened to that about a billion times.

    Good stuff, all!

I had similar difficulties narrowing down any one thing from Demon Days… It’s really tight from beginning to end and–dare I say it?–is best listened to as a cohesive whole, which is really a nice surprise in this day and age of single-track hits surrounded by wide swaths of filler. I think “Kids With Guns” emerged from the pack because I really get a kick out of the “easy does it, easy does it” and “turning us into fiiiiire” bits.

I’m desperately in need of an infusion of new stuff, though, so this meme is fun. Need my fix, man!! I checked out one of the artists that Scott listed, and really dug the material, so that goes on my “someday when I have discretionary income” list. (Advice to my fellow CD junkies: never need to suddenly replace your roof, it is t3h suck on cash flow.)

Perhaps culturally Scandinavian? I mean, they got settled by vikings and whatnot.

    Wikipedia includeth:

The usage and meaning of the term ‘Scandinavia’ is somewhat ambiguous:

    * Finland, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland are still sometimes counted as parts of Scandinavia, as they share strong social and historical ties to Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

    * In a British mindset, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark are usually included, often with the addition of Iceland, Finland, and sometimes even Greenland.

These alternative meanings are sometimes considered incorrect in some parts of Scandinavia, and occasionally some people may take offence at such usage.

So, for those occasional folks in some parts of Scandinavia who might have taken umbrage at my inclusion of Iceland in your geographical namespace, let me offer my apologies; I shall have my high school geography teacher flogged promptly. ;-)

    >I checked out one of the artists that Scott listed

Which one? (just curious; I haven’t checked any of them out yet, with the exception of Jon Brion.)

I like different tracks from Demon Days at different times, dependant on my mood, but I find it overall to be a good driving CD.

Sufjan Stevens. From th 30-second iTMS samples, I think I really dig his sound.
