On second thought, let’s not go to Camelot; it is a silly place

Some Light Reading

One of my coworkers who is a pretty serious space buff referred me to this interesting piece about how to get into space on the cheap. Good stuff; it really illustrates some of the reasons the Shuttle was such an engineering fiasco and maintenance nightmare.

It also begs the question–if we can get into space affordably, why don’t we get off our butts and go?

Because most people don’t see the point of it. More fool them. Everything we ever wanted is out there - both tangible (potentially unlimited energy, scientific breakthroughs) and intangible (the ultimate frontier and the dreams that would represent). But this week the big news wasn’t the Mars Rovers, or the new Hubble shots, or anything uplifting to the human spirit or scientific at all. Instead the big news was a halftime show which showed a big chunk of the US population a part of the female anatomy that the vast majority of us already had some experience with. I weep for the species.
